Terminology

From time to time I’ll probably say something that isn’t clear to everyone, so I’ll try and build up my own little page of terminology for you.

A

B

BCD = Buoyancy Control Device – This is the jacket warn by scuba divers which all of their equipment, possibly weights and air tank are all connected to. It also contains an air bladder in it to help towards buoyancy for the diver.

C

Chercott = Cherwell Cottage – This is the name of mum’s old cottage, a place I rented for over 9 years and become the name of my first website. It was shorted in name so that in the real world the public wouldn’t know where I lived. You should always keep your identity safe whilst online

D

E

F

Fins = Used by scuba divers for moving through water, never called flippers though they are basically the same thing, it’s terminology. Everything has their own terminology and divers call their foot wear fins

G

H

HD = Hard Drive (aka HDD)- This is the ‘squashed’ brick like object within your computer on which is stored your data and programs installed to

LOL = Laugh Out Loud – ‘short hand’ used on the internet, not to be confused with Lots of Love.

O

P

PCB = Printed Circuit Board – These you find everywhere that has electronic components. This is the green circuit board with all the wires and other items coming out of it.

Q

R

RAM = Random Access Memory (aka Memory) – This is the computer chip that computers use whilst it is turned on. Allowing Windows to quick swap between open programs. NB: This is different to Hard Drive which is the physical item within the computer on which your data is stored and programs are installed onto.

S

<SHD> = Shakes Head Disbelievingly – This is a look of when someone says something so stupid, that the only response that you can do is to shake your head and think to yourself “Why am I here?”

T

Travack = Traveling Jack – Seeing as Chercott no longer represented my life anymore, I thought up this new domain name, Traveling Jack is a character from a book I read years ago and loved it to bits. Just as Cherwell Cottage was the first and last syllable, so I applied the same to the name here.

TMTC = The Man That Can – A phrase coined by a close uni mate
